Four CHAMPS Managers Selected as CoC-trained Consultants, Will Assist Cancer Programs with CoC Accreditation

CHAMPS Oncology is pleased to announce the Commission on Cancer (CoC) has selected four CHAMPS Oncology managers to be CoC-trained Independent Consultants for the upcoming year, working to assist cancer programs achieve CoC accreditation.

Following a call for applications, Toni Hare, a CoC-trained consultant since 2002, Karen Schmidt, Brenda Mileto, and Ilona Gyerman were selected as four of the 46 CoC-trained consultants nationwide. They will receive formal training November 10-12, 2011, at the American College of Surgeons in Chicago.

For more than 35 years, CHAMPS Oncology, the leader in cancer program compliance, has been partnering with cancer programs nationwide to assist them in achieving CoC accreditation and compliance with other cancer program standards, such as NAPBC. With four CoC-trained Independent Consultants on staff, CHAMPS will be able to assist even more cancer programs with this important accreditation process.

As Commission on Cancer-Trained Consultants, their primary responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing and evaluating cancer programs’ compliance with CoC Standards.
  • Developing and implementing strategies for oncology programs to achieve or maintain compliance with CoC Standards.
  • Sharing best practices, recommendations and experiences for optimal cancer program performance.
  • Performing at least one consultative evaluation each year.
  • Providing expert support for and oversight of all required portions of the consultative visit.
  • Identifying process improvement opportunities to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the oncology program.

Among the qualifications required to be selected as a member of the CoC-Trained Consultant Team, individuals must have extensive knowledge of the new 2012 CoC Standards, experience working with multidisciplinary members of an oncology program and experience participating in an annual CoC-sponsored consultant-training program.

Vice President of CHAMPS Oncology Toni Hare, RHIT, CTR, was pleased with the announcement that she and three other CHAMPS Oncology managers would be part of the 2011-2012 CoC-Trained Consultant Team, assisting cancer programs nationwide achieve or maintain their CoC accreditation. “We are all very excited and honored to represent CHAMPS and the Commission on Cancer,” she said.  “CHAMPS believes in and supports the efforts of the CoC, so to have four CoC consultants on our staff is very humbling.”
