Melissa Smith’s Presentation at Stark State College Focuses on Cancer Registrars

CHAMPS OncologyCHAMPS Oncology’s Director of Client Services, Melissa Smith, RHIT, CTR, was invited to speak to health information management (HIM) students at Stark State College on Feb. 2, 2015. Her presentation, Cancer Registrars: Beyond the Abstract, focused on:

  • Identifying what a certified tumor registrar (CTR) is and does.
  • Explaining how someone becomes a CTR through education and credentialing.
  • Discussing the traditional role the cancer registrar holds in the hospital setting.
  • Distinguishing the new and emerging roles cancer registrars can pursue with the skill set of a CTR.

Smith’s presentation also featured CHAMPS Oncology’s What is a Cancer Registrar video, which explains the profession and the impact cancer registrars make with the information they collect.

“I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to speak again at Stark State,” Melissa said. “I’m always willing to share my knowledge and experience in order to spark student’s interest in the cancer registry field.”

This is the fourth time Smith has spoken to HIM students at Stark State. Smith was invited to speak again this year after her presentation to the Eastern Ohio Health Information Management Association. Smith has also taught a class on abstracting at Stark State.
