The Center for Health Affairs, in coordination with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), the Northeast Ohio county and city health departments and member hospitals, is closely monitoring the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19; nCoV) to ensure hospitals are prepared to care for COVID-19 patients while protecting their staff as the nation proceeds with a mass-vaccination initiative while continuing to manage surges in infections.

As the coronavirus situation evolves daily, the most up-to-date Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance for hospitals can be found on the CDC website.

National Public Health Emergency Extended
Effective July 20, 2021, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra renewed the national public health emergency declaration, allowing it to remain in effect for another 90 days. The renewal, which expires Oct. 18, maintains the blanket waivers implemented by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. These include the expansion of telehealth services among a number of others that facilitate hospital pandemic response. This is the sixth renewal of the emergency declaration, which first began Jan. 31, 2020.

U.S. Surgeon General Issues Health Misinformation Advisory Amid Nationwide COVID-19 Vaccination Push

On July 16, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued the first Surgeon General's Advisory of the Biden Administration to warn the American public about the threat and effects of health misinformation. The advisory lays out how citizens and providers can confront health misinformation by helping individuals, families and communities better identify and limit its spread, and issues numerous ways institutions in education, media, medicine, research and government can approach the issue. HHS Revises COVID-19 Provider Relief Fund Reporting Requirements

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced in June an extension of the deadline by which hospitals and other providers that received COVID-19 Provider Relief Fund money after June 30, 2020, must use their payments. HHS also extended the amount of time providers will have to report information on the use of their PRF dollars. Click here to read the full details.

Ohio Department of Health Updates COVID-19 Provider Equity Guidance

As Ohio’s COVID-19 vaccination program continues to evolve, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has posted an update to its Provider Guidance: Health Equity Considerations. This newly updated guidance offers strategies for vaccine providers to help reach Ohioans who still need to be vaccinated. The included communications toolkits are intended to assist providers with reaching as many vulnerable populations as possible and help bridge the gap in areas with low uptake of vaccine. COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Materials, Ambassador Toolkit Available on Healthy Northeast Ohio Website

Healthy Northeast Ohio, the online resource designed to provide access to population health data, evidence-based practices and information about regional health resources and activities, has been updated with COVID-19 vaccine distribution information and a Vaccine Ambassador Toolkit for advocates to help build confidence and trust in having effective conversations about COVID-19 vaccines. In partnership with BrightTALK, the largest global platform for online educational talks and events, The Center for Health Affairs has launched its Healthcare Leadership Series, a collection of webcasts featuring leaders across the region and beyond who share their insights, lessons and perspectives on the pandemic.
