National Public Health Emergency Extended
Effective Jan. 16, 2022, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra renewed the national public health emergency declaration, allowing it to remain in effect for another 90 days. The renewal, which expires April 16, maintains the blanket waivers implemented by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. These include the expansion of telehealth services among a number of others that facilitate hospital pandemic response. This is the eighth renewal of the emergency declaration, which first began Jan. 31, 2020 with a declaration by former HHS Secretary Alex M. Azar II.
