The Center Speaks to Crain’s about Medicaid Work Requirements

On Sunday, April 29, Crain’s Cleveland Healthcare/Nonprofit Reporter Lydia Coutre published the article “Hospitals cry foul over Medicaid work requirements.”

The Center for Health Affairs’ Interim President and CEO Phil Mazanec and Director of Government Relations Tony Gutowski provided context on why their Northeast Ohio hospital members oppose the state's proposal to impose Medicaid work requirements for the Medicaid expansion population to maintain their health coverage.

Coutre also references direct statements from a comment letter recently submitted by The Center to the Ohio Department of Medicaid opposing their current Medicaid waiver proposal.

"It is our belief, and that of our member hospitals, that, if approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), these changes to Ohio's Medicaid program will result in waves of disenrollment, greater administrative costs and a disruption of care at the provider level," Philip Mazanec, interim president and CEO of the Center for Health Affairs, wrote in the organization's comments to the state.

The center is a nonprofit hospital association that represents 39 providers across Northeast Ohio. Tony Gutowski, director of government relations for the center, said he isn't aware of any hospitals in the region supporting the waiver.
