The Northeast Ohio Opioid Consortium offers free opioid use disorder online educational courses and professional seminars for prescribers, registered nurses and healthcare support staff.
These self-directed courses, which are appropriate for all healthcare settings, were developed in conjunction with experts from the Opioid Consortium membership and are available through the online educational portal below.

Prescribers
Open to any prescribing clinician (MD, DO, NP, APRN, PA, etc.), this course is free and available from the comfort of your own home or workplace.

Prescribing Clinician: Introduction to Pain Management & Opioids
This course offers information to prescribers about subcategories of pain and pain syndromes, clinical conditions that cause pain, unidimensional / multidimensional approaches to pain, and pharmacologic and other methods of pain management.

Nurses
This course is comprised of four modules and aims to support nurses in all settings to improve screening, interventions and care coordination services to those in need of specialized addiction treatment.

Module A: An Introduction to Substance Use Disorders
Review possible symptoms of substance use disorder and how substance use disorders are medically diagnosed. Learn different types of risk assessment tools used in best practices to determine a patient’s risk of having a substance use disorder.

Module B: Caring for Complex Medical Patients with Co-Occurring Disorders
Review alcoholic hepatitis and other chronic illnesses intersecting with substance use disorders, and identify special considerations and nursing interventions for those with chronic pain and opioid use disorder.

Module C: Nursing Interventions and Treatment Options
Identify types of medication used to treat substance use disorders during withdrawal period and, learn the CIWA, CINA and COWS withdrawal assessments.

Module D: Managing Difficult Behaviors Exhibited by Patients, Family Members and Visitors
Learn the behavioral characteristics to identify patient needs and support positive interactions during stressful situations. Introduce the Lowline Theoretical Model, HEART Model, and the Harris Model to manage difficult behaviors and emotionally charged situations to produce healthy outcomes.
