Anderson Weighs in on Proposed Nursing Requirement

Vice President of Member Services for The Center for Health Affairs, Lisa Anderson, was recently quoted in an article published by The News-Herald on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.

The article, “Area nurses wary of plans in other states to require college degrees,” examines plans in other states to require new nurses to earn a bachelor’s degree within 10 years of beginning their career in order to continue nursing and discusses the idea of imposing similar requirements in Ohio.

“Philosophically, I think most everyone in the nursing profession agrees it’s a good goal to reach for,” Anderson said. “Practically speaking, there are concerns.”

Those concerns, she said, include ensuring colleges have enough money and faculty members to support larger nursing programs and helping the prospective nurses pay for schooling.

“On the plus side, our area hospitals are doing a good job of offering staff opportunities to become a BSN,” Anderson said.
