Ryan's Op-Ed, Plan for family health center is better for East Cleveland, Published in Plain Dealer

President and CEO of The Center for Health Affairs, Bill Ryan, wrote an Op-Ed on the closure of Cleveland Clinic's Huron Hospital, which was published by The Plain Dealer in the Forum section on Sunday, June 12, 2011.

The article highlights reasons for the closure of Huron Hospital, such as declining utilization, an inpatient population that is in the hospital to manage some type of chronic disease, and increasing emergency room visits for routine care, as difficulties hospital face. But the article also discusses the bigger issue of reconfiguring our region's health care resources to best serve a population.

"If the experience surrounding St. Michael's closure and the development of the 'MetroHealth System's Broadway Family Health Center are any indication, Cleveland Clinic's investment in a family health center for East Cleveland will improve access to health care . . . More importantly, the center should result in better, more proactive and preventive care and, in the long run, provide better health outcomes than our current reactive models."
