Earlier this month, the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA), along with the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS), issued guidance clarifying for hospitals the proper procedures for restocking ambulances with Schedule II controlled substances. Recently, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) confirmed that a 1992 waiver is still in effect allowing Ohio hospitals to conduct a one-for-one drug exchange for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) units that do not possess a DEA registration. For those
with a DEA registration, hospitals may provide only manufacturers’ stock supplies to the EMS unit; they may not break open packages. For more, including information regarding documentation procedures, refer to an OHA
