Medicare Expert Speaks at Reimbursement Forum Meeting

Attendees of the November meeting of The Center for Health Affairs Reimbursement Forum heard from Medicare policy experts regarding recourse available to hospitals seeking to address errors made by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) affecting Medicare reimbursement.

Experts from Healthcare Reimbursement Services, Inc. discussed a Washington, D.C., Circuit Court of Appeals ruling allowing providers to request a hearing before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board because CMS had not disclosed significant errors it made in determining hospitals’ Disproportionate Share/Supplemental Security Income ratios between 1987 and 2000. According to the speakers, it is likely that many hospitals experienced diluted Medicare reimbursement during this time period due to CMS’ errors.
