On Thursday, June 14, 2012, the NEONI Steering Committee and Greater Cleveland Organization of Nurse Executives (GCONE) hosted a presentation on The Legal Pitfalls of "Friending" Social Media in Healthcare. The hour-long presentation, held at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center in Brecksville, helped prepare nursing leaders in academic and practice settings to deal with the challenges presented by social networking related to healthcare environments. Presenter
Jeana Singleton, a partner from the law firm Brennan, Manna & Diamond, LLC, talked about the areas of legal concern regarding the use of social media in healthcare settings and discussed strategies for related legal compliance in healthcare. She provided examples of events, concerns, actions, and ethical and safety implications, as well as methods to ensure confidentiality, policy and procedure implementation, and staff guidelines.
During the presentation, Singleton’s strongest piece of advice was “education is prevention,” when it comes to avoiding problems with social media in healthcare. She encouraged open communication, the use of training programs, as well as thorough codes of conduct and policies regarding social media in the workplace.
