Patient Days and Discharges Up in the Fourth Quarter

NewsThe fourth quarter of 2012 showed increases in volume for several indicators in comparison to the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the latest Key Indicators Report. Overall, patient days and discharges were up for the quarter, increasing by 0.81 percent and 1.0 percent respectively. Yearend numbers, however, indicated a small overall decline in volume. Other indicators were mixed and generally followed ongoing trends of growth or decline.

The report also highlights an increase in emergency room cases for the fourth quarter, a trend that is likely the result of the onset of an early flu season. In the fourth quarter of 2012, emergency room cases increased by 2.11 percent. The increase in December for this indicator – when the flu season hit an early peak – was almost 7 percent.
