Outpatient Surgery Cases Growing Substantially

The most recent Key Indicators Report showed outpatient surgery cases have grown substantially while total discharges, total days, emergency cases as well as several other indicators closed the fourth quarter with less volume than the same quarter the prior year. 

After falling by almost 9,000 cases in 2010 and 2011, outpatient surgery cases in Northeast Ohio rebounded by more than 19,000 cases 2012. An increase of over 3,000 cases was seen between 2012 and 2013. Overall, these cases have grown by 24.3 percent from 2001 to 2013, driving the nearly 16 percent increase of the overall number of surgery cases in the region. 

This trend of increasing outpatient volume is not new and is not isolated to Northeast Ohio. While there are likely many factors that contribute to this trend, dissecting Northeast Ohio’s data provides some clues about what’s driving it in greater Cleveland; namely off-campus outpatient surgery cases.
