Total psychiatric patient volume in Northeast Ohio continued to rise in the second quarter of 2015, according to a recently published Key Indicators report by The Center for Health Affairs. Psychiatric volume, which includes both psychiatric and chemically-dependent patients, demonstrated growth for both total days and total discharges in the second quarter of 2015, rising by 5.08 percent and 4.42 percent, respectively, when compared to the same quarter in 2014. The report noted that volume for this indicator has been on the rise for over a decade and goes on to provide an analysis of the possible factors influencing this trend.
In addition to psychiatric patient volume in Northeast Ohio, the region continued to see a rise in other categories as well. Total patient days for the second quarter of 2015 rose by 1.05 percent and total patient discharges rose by 1.28 percent. Consistent with previous quarters, outpatient surgical cases rose by 2.79 percent in the second quarter, while inpatient surgical cases decreased by 1.69 percent. The number of patients under observation status, which has been on the rise for a number of years, also increased by 2.80 percent.
