Cirillo Presents on Nurse Turnover at National Forum

Patricia CirilloPatricia Cirillo, PhD, vice president of initiatives and analytics, The Center for Health Affairs, presented Nurse Turnover and Geographic Relocation Patterns at The 2016 National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers’ Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. April 27 – 29.

"The purpose of this conference was to address issues such as nurse turnover and shortages as well as to strategize ways to improve collaboration, cooperation and communication among healthcare workers, healthcare agencies and policy makers to ultimately build a strong healthcare workforce," said Cirillo.

Cirillo presented Nurse Turnover and Geographic Relocation Patterns to a group of nurse workforce entities who focus on addressing the nursing shortage within their state and contribute to global efforts. Some highlights included:

  • The proportion of RNs working in the same region in Ohio between 2013 and 2015 ranged from a low of 63 percent in Southeast Ohio to a high of 78 percent in Central and Northwest Ohio, which suggests a fair amount of movement of currently working nurses.
  • During the same period, 27 percent of RNs changed their work setting (though not necessarily their employer).
  • Nearly half of RNs changed their practice area during the same time period.
