NEONI Reveals Shortage of Nurses to Increase to 3,500 in 2020

ShortageofNursesThe shortage of nurses in Northeast Ohio is expected to increase from 750 to 3,500 in 2020, according to NEONI’s recently released 2015 Nursing Forecaster.

“We’re optimistic that through our NEONI initiatives such as prep2practice™, an online tool that works with businesses and schools to match students with real-life experiences in nursing and more, and the PERQS Center, which continues to develop unique opportunities to harness nursing excellence, we are able to proactively address the shortage of nurses in our region,” said Lisa Anderson, MSN, RN, senior vice president of Member Services, The Center for Health Affairs.

Due in part to NEONI’s efforts, the Northeast Ohio region has seen a 2.2 percent increase in registered nurses (RNs) and a 23.7 percent increase in advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) since 2013.

NEONI’s 2015 Nursing Forecaster unveiled several other key facts about the region’s RN and APRN workforce including:

  • Northeast Ohio is home to more than 1/3 of the state’s nurses. 
  • 5.2 percent of nurses working in Northeast Ohio in 2013 were working elsewhere in 2015.
  • 47 is the median age of RNs and APRNs, which is down from a median age of 49 in 2013.
  • 9 percent of APRNs and RNs in the workforce are men, this is up from 8 percent in 2013.
  • Of the nurses working full time, 82 percent are APRNs and 75.6 percent are RNs.
