Log in to access The Center for Health Affairs' Volume Statistics & Key IndicatorsThe Key Indicators Report released in November examines the rise in drug-related emergency department visits in Northeast Ohio. The report, which uses information from both The Center’s Volume Statistics program and EpiCenter, a real-time reporting system that monitors emergency department usage, found an uptick in the number of drug-related emergency department visits during the second quarter of 2017, specifically in the number of patients arriving because of a heroin or opioid overdose.

Overall, hospitals in Northeast Ohio saw an increase in on-campus emergency department admissions of over 5 percent during the second quarter of 2017. Other findings include:

  • Over a 3 percent increase in outpatient surgeries
  • A less than 1 percent increase in total patient days
  • Over a 3 percent increase in observation patients

The report also examined national trends related to hospital workforce and revenue cycle management. For more information on the report or the data examining drug-related emergency department visits in Northeast Ohio, contact us
