Community Health Worker Training Held as CHWs Prepare to Survey Residents in Targeted Communities

Community Health Worker Training Held as CHWs Prepare to Survey Residents in Targeted CommunitiesTo bolster efforts to gather important information about the health of individuals living in selected Cuyahoga County communities, HIP-Cuyahoga held a community health worker (CHW) training on June 20, 2019. The training prepared CHWs to survey residents in targeted communities. These efforts will support the random sample survey process that the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio has been spearheading as part of the 2019 Cuyahoga County Community Health Assessment.

CHW training was led by Nichelle Shaw, supervisor, Cuyahoga County Board of Health, and included the following components:

  • Overview of the 2019 Cuyahoga County Community Health Assessment shared by Kirstin Craciun, director of community outreach, The Center for Health Affairs
  • Outline of a CHW research project presented by Andrea Szabo, medical resident, Case Western Reserve University
  • Discussion of the CHW process to survey residents in targeted communities led by Delores Collins, executive director, A Vision of Change
  • Review of the communication guide and opportunity to role play facilitated by Greg Brown, executive director, PolicyBridge
  • Group discussion of potential survey sites

CHWs employed by A Vision of Change and volunteers from the Northeast Ohio Association for Hispanic Health (NOAHH) will be surveying residents in targeted communities throughout the summer. Data gathered will allow HIP-Cuyahoga partners to learn more about health and quality of life in selected neighborhoods. Together with additional data sources, this work will lay the foundation for participating hospitals, health departments and other partners to work together in setting community priorities and take action to address those priorities.
