May Brings a Change in Leadership at The Center

The month of May brought a change in leadership at The Center for Health Affairs, as Phil Mazanec handed the torch to Brian Lane. Brian’s first day at the organization was May 15, and May 31 will mark Phil’s last, the conclusion of a long and distinguished career at The Center.

The year was 1979 when Phil first joined the organization, then called the Greater Cleveland Hospital Association, having been brought on board as director of pension services. He went on to grow with the association, eventually being named senior vice president in 1993, a role that allowed him to apply his business acumen to shepherding the success of CHAMPS Healthcare, The Center’s affiliate.

In 2003, Phil was named chief operating officer, a position from which he continued to lead CHAMPS along with the organization’s human resources, information technology, accounting and facilities functions. In late December 2017, Phil was asked to lead The Center as the interim president and CEO, which he continued to do until this month. Phil has watched – and also helped to lead – the organization as it has transformed over the last four decades, adding new services, gaining clients and growing its membership. Phil’s transition into retirement brings with it a change in leadership at The Center, and he leaves organization in Brian’s capable hands.

Brian, who comes to the organization from Oracle, brings with him a strong background in executive leadership as well as extensive experience in healthcare, technology and association management. At Oracle, he served as the key account director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), one of the company’s top revenue-producing and market-leading accounts. In this role, he was chartered with developing and driving the execution of a multi-year strategic plan along with worldwide communication inside the Oracle global organization and with the key account.

Prior to serving in this role, Brian was Oracle’s global client advisor for Cigna and CVS, and also had been the lead healthcare strategist for HHS and the U.S. Defense Health Agency. He has held strategic executive positions for leading technology companies, Fortune 500 companies, Big 5 consulting practices, clinical practices, medical communication firms and associations.

At The Center, Brian is applying his leadership and vision to ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of an ever-changing healthcare environment, anticipating member and client needs, and responding with speed and agility. Brian brings his guidance to the organization’s ongoing work to develop and deliver innovative programs and services to support members and clients as they work to meet their missions and serve their communities.

The Center and CHAMPS warmly welcome Brian, and with gratitude extend best wishes to Phil.
