Opioid Consortium, Members Contribute to AHA Stem the Tide Publication

The Northeast Ohio Hospital Opioid Consortium, including two of its member organizations, had the opportunity to participate in the development of a publication released this summer by the American Hospital Association (AHA), Stem the Tide: Opioid Stewardship Measurement Guide.

The guide is a companion piece to the Stem the Tide: Addressing the Opioid Epidemic toolkit, which was released in 2017 and is a widely used resource offering guidance and information to hospitals and health systems on how they can partner with patients, clinicians and communities to address the opioid epidemic.

Developed through rigorous research and collaboration with leading experts, the new AHA Stem the Tide measurement implementation guide provides an effective and actionable list of measures to implement best practices using data, address potential gaps in patient care, and identify opportunities for continued improvements in opioid stewardship.

Dr. Eric Chiang, an anesthesiologist with Cleveland Clinic, and Heidi DelVecchio, BSN, RN, CPHQ, who works in risk management and patient safety with University Hospitals, served on the advisory committee, contributing their time and expertise to the development of the guide. The Opioid Consortium served as a reviewing organization.
