The Center Receives Over $207,000 in Year 2 Funding Under CDC Overdose Data to Action Grant

The Center for Health Affairs was awarded $207,076 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support the second year of activities associated with the CDC Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant program. The Center is a partner, along with MetroHealth and several other local organizations, of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH), which was the lead applicant for this initiative.

This collaborative work is in the second year of the three-year project, which is aimed at improving the data available on fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses in order to better understand the opioid epidemic, pinpoint hotspots and, ultimately, save lives. The new year-two funding is in addition to $170,000 in funds that are being carried over from the previous grant year, which saw some delay in activities due to the pandemic.

The Center’s portion of this project, which is overseen by Jeri Jewett-Tennant, MPH, project manager of health system education, is related to building, implementing and distributing educational tools and resources for hospitals and other providers. As part of the OD2A work, The Center is working with The MetroHealth System’s Office of Opioid Safety to create a Peer Review Model Toolkit, which is a step-by-step guide to creating and implementing a peer review model that can be used by hospitals. It will include opioid mitigation resources for physicians, pharmacists and other providers as well as an academic detailing section that incorporates train-the-trainer resources for Opioid Consortium hospitals.

OUD / SUD Treatment Innovation Webinar

Also part of CDC Overdose Data to Action grant activities, on Oct. 12 The Center, CCBH and MetroHealth are hosting a webinar on Ohio opioid and substance use disorder treatment innovations developed in response to COVID-19. The panel event will be moderated by Joan Papp, MD, director of the MetroHealth Office of Opioid Safety, and will include the participation of the following experts from four Ohio health systems, who will present their novel linkages to care:

• Stephanie Shorts, CDCA, and Eric Sigmund, APRN, CNP, with MetroHealth’s Project DAWN.
• Krisanna Deppen, MD, with OhioHealth.
• Emily Kauffman, DO, MPH, and Julie Teater, MD, with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
• Richard J. Ryan, MD, FACEP, with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
