In January, Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals (UH) both made individual investments to the Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition, a public-private partnership formed to address and prevent the pernicious issue of lead poisoning in Cleveland.
On Jan. 11, UH announced that it had committed a total of $1.2 million to the cause as part of its new Community Health Investment Strategy. With this new strategy, UH will take a portion of assets that would traditionally have been invested elsewhere and make them available for investments into the under-resourced parts of Cleveland.
Two days later, on Jan. 13, Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Dr. Tom Mihaljevic was joined by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, Council President Blaine A. Griffin and United Way of Greater Cleveland President and CEO August Napoli to announce a $50 million contribution over five years to the Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition.
With the Jan. 13 announcement, the Lead Safe Home Fund has raised approximately $115 million, enough funding to ensure that all rental homes built before 1978 are lead safe as well as expand its work to more quickly, comprehensively, and definitively address the impact of lead poisoning in Cleveland.
